Monday Ubani, Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’ s (NBA) SPIDEL Section stated that the Department of State Services’ strategy for trying to arrest Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, is ” fraudulent. ”
After the DSS filed an ex parte application to arrest and detain Emefiele, Ubani made his criticisms during a live interview on Channels Television’ s Sunrise Daily.
The Federal High Court’ s Chief Judge, Justice John Tsoho, denied the application on Monday, stating that there was insufficient proof to support the secret police’ s allegations that Emefiele had been involved in money laundering and the financing of terrorism.
The Judge made a point of noting that the respondent’ s name was merely stated as ” Godwin Emefiele” during the case without any indication that he was the same person as the CBN governor.
Ubani compared the case against Emefiele to that of Walter Onnoghen, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), who was found guilty on six counts of false asset declaration on April 18, 2019, and was disqualified from holding any public office for the following ten years by the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
” Let’ s begin to sanitise our system and let the right thing be done. You are going to arrest a CBN governor; you never even disclosed his identity to the court. That is even fraudulent in the first place it was not mentioned that ‘ this is the central bank governor. ‘ We are doing things wrongly the way Onnoghen was removed. “
