Former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media to former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Director General for the Labour Party’ s presidential candidate, Doyin Okupe, was found guilty by the Federal High Court in Abuja of violating the Money Laundering Act, according to the court’ s ruling.
In a ruling issued on Monday, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu found Okupe guilty of violating Sections 16(1) and (2) of the Money Laundering Act for accepting cash payments in excess of the maximum permitted by the Act without first going via a financial institution.
During Col. Sambo Dasuki’ s administration, Okupe is alleged to have received hundreds of millions of dollars in cash from the NSA’ s headquarters.
In accordance with Section 310 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), Okupe has the right to call witnesses to testify about his character. Justice Ojukwu has halted proceedings until 1: 45 p. m. in order to allow Okupe to exercise this right before the court can proceed to sentence the convict.
In other reports, politicians in particular have received warnings from the police to refrain from any actions that would jeopardize the general elections in 2023.
The Force argued that elections should be a process to provide Nigerians with excellent government, and it urged political parties to conduct their campaigns in a peaceful manner and abstain from acts of violence, vandalism, and other actions that could influence the election.
