INEC Tells Lawan And Akpabio To Take Their Exclusion To Court

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has instructed politicians who are dissatisfied with the conduct of primaries to seek judicial recourse.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan and former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, were selected as candidates for the Yobe North and Akwa Ibom north-west Senatorial Districts, respectively, by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, Lawan and Akpabio were not included in the list provided by INEC.

“The Commission stands by the monitoring reports received from our state offices in respect to the Akwa Ibom North West and Yobe North Senatorial District primaries,” Festus Okoye, INEC spokesperson, said in a statement released on Saturday.

According to section 285 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and sections 29 (5) and 84 (14) of the Electoral Act of 2002, he stated that aggrieved parties should bring their case before the Federal High Court.

Okoye also stated that INEC’s team has been working tirelessly to fulfill the avalanche of demands for certified true copies (CTCs) of documents.
