Aisha Buhari, the First Lady, has disclosed that her husband, President Muhammadu Buhari, has suffered from post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for many years.
She disclosed this information on Tuesday while attending a ceremony in Abuja to mark the beginning of construction on the Armed Forces Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Centre (AFPTSDC).
According to the report, Mrs. Buhari served as the Special Guest of Honor at an event that was organized by the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA).
Mrs. Buhari has claimed that her husband’ s participation in the civil war without rehabilitation, his overthrow as military leader of the state, and his illegal detention for forty months caused him to suffer from depression.
According to the First Lady, President Buhari’ s defeat in three elections in a row further exacerbated the depression and made living for her family unbearable.
Mrs. Buhari further stated that she noticed the effects of her husband’ s depression at an early stage in their marriage and that she became the unintentional physiotherapist for his recovery during this time.
She said, ” My husband served the Nigerian Army for 27 years before he was overthrown in a coup d’ état. He fought a civil war for 30 months without rehabilitation; he ruled Nigeria for 20 months and was detained for 40 months without disclosing the nature of his offense.
