Following the resignation of Doyin Okupe as the Labour Party Director General, Nigerians have demanded that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu step down his presidential ambition for commiting a similar offense to Okupe’ s.
@Ayke on Twitter wrote: ” When will Tinubu step down for handing cash in excess of 5 millions when he used bullion van to carry cash in 2015? Cos Doyin is being convicted for a very similar crime. ”
@FirstLadyship wrote: ” Doyin Okupe’ s resignation is a big moral booster to Peter Obi & the Labour Party. Politicians don’ t resign in Nigeria, they will rather die or chew wet jeans.
” The question now is, ” when will Bola Tinubu step down & apologize for his drug dealings in the United States of America? ”
Meanwhile, Okupe, in reaction to his conviction for money laundering, had noted that his enemies have kept on failing in their mission against him.
Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had arraigned Okupe in 2019 on a 59- count charge bordering on alleged money laundering and diversion of funds to the tune of N702 million.
On Monday, December 19th, a judgement
by the federal high court found Okupe guilty of contravening sections 16(1)& (2) of the Money Laundering Act, for accepting cash payments without going through a financial institution, in excess of the threshold allowed under the Act.
