According to a report from The Nation, the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, along with his counterparts in Oyo and Benue states, Seyi Makinde and Samuel Ortom, will not attend the launch of the presidential campaign for the People’ s Democratic Party (PDP) today in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
Along with their two other colleagues, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and Okezie Ikepeazu, the three disgruntled governors skipped the inauguration of the campaign council on September 28 at the Conference Center in Abuja. This was done in protest of the election results (Abia).
Also on Sunday, October 9, Governor Ortom said that he would not give in to threats or blackmail from followers of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, the national chairman of the PDP and a native of Benue state. Ayu is the incumbent governor of Benue state.
He claimed that because the chairman had pledged to step down in the event that a northerner emerged as the winner, the chairman should keep his word and step down.
As a result of Ayu’ s unwillingness to retire after Atiku Abubakar was selected as the candidate for president, the primary election for the largest opposition party dragged on for a very long time.
In the sake of equality, justice, and fair play, the governors have urged that Ayu should step down from his position in order to make room for a Southerner.
